
Characteristics of a Successful Project
Begin with a well defined goal with expert input
and detailed planning.
1. Create a positive environmental change
2. Advanced Planning – A comprehensive planning effort by
a cross section of the
community. Develop a short and long term master plan.
3. Continuous Committed Leadership
a. Person/s committed to completing the grant writing process.
The leader is an
excellent communicator, networks with the community, has good
listening skills
and delegates responsibly.
4. Volunteer Commitment
a. Volunteer commitment needs to be long-term and includes
maintaining the trees. Long term may include
paid experts.
5. Volunteer Involvement on Planting Day
a. Refreshments are provided for volunteers.
b. Volunteers are trained beforehand and assigned specific
responsibilities.
c. Adequate equipment is provided for volunteers.
d. Prep work is done prior to planting (clean area
of weeds, dig holes)
e. Volunteers consider the planting stewardship.
6. Community Building
a. The community is informed via announcements or
other advertising methods.
7. Inter-agency Partnership
a. Potential partners are provided a clear vision
of the project which is clearly defined and supported by a dedicated group
of volunteers.
8. Appropriate Plant Selection
a. Appropriate plants are selected for the
planting area.
b. Qualified experts are asked for information
and guidance.
c. Maintenance requirements are clearly
defined.
d. Considerations are given to what the
plant will look like at maturity.
e. Utility line clearance above and below
ground is considered.
9. Proper Horticultural Procedures on
Planting Day
a. A qualified arborist is present
on planting day to supervise activities,
and assists with plant selection at nursery.
b. One trained supervisor oversees
5-10 volunteers.
c. Adequate mulch is provided.
10. Short Term Maintenance
a. Well defined, technically correct
plan
b. Adequate mulch to provide
moisture/weed control
c. Pest control
d. Involvement of technically
qualified individual
e. Adequate resources - tools,
time and training materials
f. Water - monitor and trouble
shooting
11. Long Term Maintenance -
More Than One Year
a. Adequate mulch, weed and
pest control, pruning with
arborist.
12. Trees Alive or Flourishing
After Two Years and Five
Years
a. Trees are structurally
sound, healthy, with
proper form and shape.
