Maintenance Schedule

Solicit the support of a qualified arborist who will provide training: on planting day, and with the long term maintenance of the trees.

Arborist Inspection Schedule:

Three, six months, and one year after installation.
Note: If a tree is stressed this schedule should be adjusted for more. frequent visits. If there are significant changes in the tree prior to the first visit, call the arborist!

The three month arborist inspection visit will include:

Checking the color and size of the tree.
Checking for mechanical injuries.
Adjusting stakes if necessary.
Pruning damaged branches (structural pruning).
Checking and/or replacing tree guards.
Ensuring the proper amount of watering is being done and inspecting for water coverage.
Looking for insect infestation.

The six month inspection visit will include:

All of the above
Replenishing the mulch if necessary.
Checking the soil and root zone.

The one year inspection visit will include:

All of the above.
Removing stakes.
Replenishing the mulch.
Removing tree protection.
Recommending replanting if necessary.

Prescription if the tree/project needs help:

Send soil and leaf tissue samples to UH for analysis.
Replace the tree guards and/or stakes and mulch (for mechanical injury).
At least 4-inches of mulch should be placed at a 3-foot diameter around the base of the trunk.
Green mulch is NOT recommended for young trees.
Use wood chips so as not to draw moisture from the trees.

Make recommendations on frequency and quantity of watering should structural pruning be required:

Remove all dead, dying and damaged branches.
Remove cross branches, V-crotches and co-dominant stems.
